With the passing of the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and the song “Respect” playing in a loop in my head, I thought it worthwhile to look at this concept of Respect and how to get it. I was always told that you earn respect, which implies action on your part. And yet it is a concept that requires two parties: You can act in a way that could garner respect, but whether you are actually respected as a result is totally up to the person observing you. Which brings to mind the phrase “what someone thinks about you is none of your business”….and the key point that all you really need to do is Respect Yourself. (Which now has started another song looping through my mind…)
Here are ways to put yourself in a position to be respected – by yourself and possibly others:
- Surround yourself with others who act in a way you respect
- Stand firm in your convictions
- Listen to others
- Be Kind
- Stand up for others
- Be clear about your values and live according to them
- Be mindful of your appearance
- Treat your home/auto/possessions with respect
- Treat your money with respect. Don’t just cram it in your wallet or purse – order it neatly and give it the respect it deserves
- Act with grace under pressure
- Be innovative – take calculated risks
- Walk the talk – Follow through on your commitments
- Be mindful of the power of your words – choose them carefully.
- Respect others
- Make a decision, even if its difficult to do
- Give freely
- Continually improve, based on honest self-assessments
- Provide answers, not just questions
- Laugh at yourself
- Love life
